Harold Melvin's Bluenotes and Evelyn Champagne King

On Saturday August 6th, the Viking Pride Foundation is hosting its second annual summer concert featuring under the lights on Miller Field.  This year's performance features Harold Melvin's Bluenotes and Evelyn Champagne King.  This theme is similar to last year's hugely successful disco era show featuring the band Tavares.  The Tavares event was attended by nearly 900 people - ask around, a great time was had by all.  For those purchasing VIP seats on the field, you will have access to the dance floor situated right in front of the stage - a crows favorite from last year (yes we are getting a bigger dance floor this year!).

The Viking Pride Foundation (VPF) is an IRS recognized 501-c3 non-profit charity dedicated to supporting cocurricular

activities in the Winthrop Public Schools. Since formed in 2004, the Foundation has donated over $550,000 to

the school system through various initiatives. We believe strongly that every child deserves the opportunity to

participate in athletics and other co-curriculars such as drama and student council. We are the first Foundation of its

kind in Massachusetts and have mentored many other communities in ways to reduce “user fees” and encourage

Winthrop Public School Building Survey

The Winthrop Public Schools will conduct a community survey in regards to our school Rebuilding Process.  The survey will begin Monday, July 25^th and end on Monday August 8^th.  The survey will assist the School Building Committee with which options to explore for the Feasibility Study for Winthrop High School.  In addition the School Building Committee will conduct two public hearings.  The dates are Thursday, August 11^th at 7pm and Tuesday August 16^th at 7pm.  Both public hearings will be held in the Harvey Room at Town Hall.

Background

The Town of Winthrop submitted a request to Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) in 2006 for the renovation of Winthrop High School.  The MSBA subsequently voted to invite Winthrop into the MSBA’s capital pipeline for a repair project at WHS in Oct 2007.  In recent months the School Building Committee has acknowledged that both the WHS and Winthrop Middle School are in need of major repair/renovation.  The Town would like to explore the possibility of constructing a Middle-High school complex as opposed to renovating the existing buildings.  In March 2011, a letter was sent to MSBA requesting that Winthrop be allowed to explore the combined Middle-High school options, in addition to renovation, as part of the feasibility scope.  MSBA recently responded to the Town, that in order for us to add this as another option to explore, we must conduct an outreach to gauge community support.  Therefore we ask that you complete the survey on either the Town or School website so the Building Committee can gauge our community support.  Please note all we are asking is whether you wish for the committee to explore this option.

Just in time for the start of summer, the Summer Reading Program is up and ready to go.

Please be aware that the recommended reading list is just that, recommended. The books on the list are NOT REQUIRED. After this list was assembled, we learned that quite a few of the titles are not available through the Winthrop Library or through inter-library loan. This is meant to be a fun and enriching program, not a required work assignment. We hope you view this as an opportunity to explore our local library with your child. Ms. Nickerson and Ms. Connolly of the Children's Room are quite happy to recommend other books appropriate to your child's age and reading level.

Thanks to Ms. Nickerson, she will also be setting aside a special math section of books that you can borrow.
